Sarah Lewis-Hammond interviews Susie Howells of Greenmetrics about what she does and why she does it!

I was recently interviewed by Sarah Lewis-Hammond of The Argus about Greenmetrics. Here’s that interview in full!

What is it you do? I’m a business consultant specialising in helping businesses and organisations measure and communicate sustainability performance, such as environmental and local community issues. At the same time I can help them to develop or refresh their approach to managing responsibly, exploring ways to reduce waste, improve efficiency and save money.

Why do you do it? There is such a focus on economic success, and while a healthy economy is crucial, it doesn’t have to be at the expense of all other values and I know it’s possible to achieve a much better balance. In fact it can be a real competitive advantage for businesses to demonstrate they’re thinking longer-term.

What makes your organisation green? Greenmetrics has an environmental policy, and I do track performance on a regular basis. It’s not perfect, but does make sure that environmental issues are considered when decisions are made and there is a commitment to continual improvement. My business is all about helping people to measure things they might not be used to measuring particularly environmental impacts, and I do work hard to make sure that clients can communicate genuine improvements, without resorting to greenwash.

Are you green at home as well? Yes, I work from home a lot so it’s difficult to draw a line between home and work. I’m well-intentioned like many people, and sometimes there’s a balance between what you can afford to do and what would be ideal, not to mention how much you’re prepared to put family relationships at risk through regular ‘gentle reminders’ to switch things off when you’re not using them!

What’s your latest green project/obsession and how did it happen? I’ve recently moved to a house with a proper garden and completed a horticultural course so it’s got to be gardening, especially growing veg.

What do you say to climate sceptics? In the big picture, I’d say that everyone has a different perspective and understanding of the world around them. My own perspective is that once a certain amount of environmental and atmospheric change has taken place then other changes over which we have less control may be accelerated. What’s the harm in accepting that the science might not be perfect, but there just might be something in it so proceed with caution and in the meantime look at becoming more efficient and saving a bit of energy.

Can you estimate your ecological footprint? I’ve tried various methods and come up with different answers, so it’s probably along the lines of ‘could do better’

Where are we headed: apocalypse or utopia? Probably neither one thing nor the other Why? Because there’s such global imbalance that Utopia in one place is bound to be apocalypse for someone else.

What’s your post-oil skill? Courgettes, potatoes and French beans (just like the ones we get from Africa, but produced in Hove).

What’s your philosophy on greener living? Make it the attractive, easy option, not to be sanctimonious or judgemental about it. Accept that everyone’s got different values but that we could all probably look at how we live and work and make a few changes.

What does your perfect sustainable world look like? There would be a common understanding of future sustainability and balance in the world, together with inspirational leaders and the will to change direction. World peace would be involved, together with eradication of inequality and poverty. Top Gear would no longer be on the telly.

I’ve been involved in Brighton and Hove 10:10 since of a few of us got together at the end of last year, inspired by the national 10:10 campaign, a love of our city and a desire to get something tangible off the ground to reduce carbon emissions in Brighton and Hove. I’d also just watched “The Age of Stupid” film, which really struck a chord.

To me it’s such a brilliant concept. We know the UK has to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, including carbon dioxide by 80% by 2050. If you start looking into how this might be achieved it looks pretty daunting. The 10:10 campaign is a sensible start, involving no sanctimonious finger-wagging or massive personal sacrifices. It’s an attractive option for most people: clear, inclusive, engaging and helps us to start thinking about measurable changes – not just a few high-profile initiatives.

The launch today, in the iconic setting of the Royal Pavilion in the sunshine, was great, and the culmination of lots of hard work from the team, who were all out in force. Eugenie Harvey, director of the national 10:10 campaign came along. She said Brighton and Hove is one of the leading 10:10 cities, and talked about the campaign creating a real mainstream groundswell of action, bringing people together from all sections of society towards achievable and meaningful reductions in carbon.

We’ve spent the past few months consulting people and businesses, developing the campaign to suit Brighton and Hove, and recruiting special 10:10 pioneers to help spread the word. It was great to see so many there today, including the council leadership, Mary Mears, John Barradell and Ayas Fallon Khan, and a lovely cross section of businesses, families, individuals and representatives from different organisations, including: Oliver Heath, Flemmich Webb, Anya Ledwith, Sally Barnard, Rachel Cottam, Olu Eligbe and David Brindley from the PCT, Jason Mannix from Brighton Pier, Jude Badger and Deana Ward from Brighton University, Nick Hutchinson, Charlie Allesbrook from the Business Community Partnership, Olivia from Terre a Terre and many others I didn’t get chance to meet. People I did talk to were interested, enthusiastic and keen to get more involved in the project as it moves forward over the year.

A reduction of 10% is achievable by most people and organisations, and the campaign stimulates us to think differently and look at what we’re wasting. It’s mad when you really start to look even superficially – we’re spending money to light already lit areas, to heat outdoors, to cool areas we’re paying to heat.

The Brighton and Hove 10:10 campaign brings people together from all walks of life to share experience and be part of the solution, and I’ve really enjoyed being part of the journey so far. Over the next few weeks we’ll be training the pioneers, working on helping people with measuring their 10%, tracking down case studies and good ideas to share on the website, looking out for people who need a bit of help and generally boosting the campaign across town. Our lovely website http://www.brightonandhove1010.org/ went live this week. Have a look – and please join in!

There could be a very positive, new way forward for your business. Climate change has the potential to bring out the best in business – with leadership, technology and innovation coming forward to meet new challenges.

It would be hard to miss current media coverage about climate change around the Copenhagen summit, (7-18th December 2009), where the United Nations will try to agree global targets to tackle greenhouse gas emissions.

Scientists predict that global warming will cause potentially catastrophic changes in the world around us over the course of this century, including extreme weather, sea level rise, water shortages, food shortages and extinctions. (DECC, Roadmap to Copenhagen, 2009)

It’s easy to be daunted, turned off or confused by climate change reports. We may think it won’t affect us directly. And anyway, there are higher priorities. But while some businesses need to focus on immediate challenges, many are now thinking longer-term about how they can emerge successfully from the recession.

Companies with a clear corporate social responsibility strategy compete well for new business and to keep their existing customers. It generates a positive reputation if genuinely done well, and can be a real “win-win”: building sales and saving costs. An environmental policy is mandatory in tenders to supply government departments, local authorities and London 2012. These organisations have to demonstrate responsibility throughout their supply chains.

Businesses don’t exist in isolation – they play a valuable role in society. Social values have an increasingly important role in influencing business strategy which, more than ever, needs to reflect changes in culture and opinion. Public outrage for example at MP expenses and bankers’ bonuses had a significant influence this year on public confidence in these institutions.

An effective approach towards risk is also relevant, and known to improve business resilience during a recession. It helps businesses lead the way when the much-anticipated green shoots of recovery begin to appear. These companies tend to have longer-term strategies in place, are better able to anticipate what’s ahead and can put the right plans and solutions in place. These plans now need to address the potential for greater regulation, and for energy to become more scarce, more expensive and less reliable in its supply.

There could be a very positive, new way forward for your business. Climate change has the potential to bring out the best in business – with leadership, technology and innovation coming forward to meet new challenges.

Making a start can be quite straightforward. Here are some things you can do:

A basic energy survey is free for many companies (www.carbontrust.co.uk).

Interest-free loans and grants are often available for energy efficiency measures www.greengrantsmachine.co.uk.

Sign up to the 10:10 campaign (www.1010uk.org) to reduce emissions by 10% for 2010 – there’s plenty of ideas and advice on the website.

There’s a comprehensive list of information and support on the Brighton and Hove Business Forum’s website www.brightonbusiness.co.uk under “Business and Climate Change”.

For inspiration, have a look at case studies of businesses who are already doing this well www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/business/Business/Resources/Publications-and-Case-Studies; or – more locally, look at the BETRE website www.betre.org.uk. As well as case studies they have lots of help for businesses to become more efficient, cut costs and work towards a low-carbon economy.

I’d be really interested to hear how you get on - please call me on 07775 671706.

Two weeks ago I watched “The Age of Stupid”. The film and the discussion that followed inspired me to sign up to 10:10. It feels to me like a strong campaign that helps people to understand what can be done to reduce carbon emissions, provides lots of support in taking the first steps, and encourages ideas and ongoing progress. I think it will make a real difference.

This is what they say:

“This year, thousands of individuals and organisations from across the country are putting aside their differences to help write the first chapter of 21st Century’s biggest story.

The idea is simple: we work together to achieve a 10% cut in the UK’s carbon emissions in 2010. From village post offices to City skyscrapers, everyone’s invited.

Cutting 10% in one year is a bold target, but for most of us it’s an achievable one, and is in line with what scientists say we need right now. And by signing up to a 10% target we’re not just supporting 10:10 - we’re making it happen.

The success of 10:10 depends on getting everyone involved, and the 10:10 website has all the tools you need to pass the message on far and wide. We need to start spreading the word to every corner of the country, inviting our friends, family, colleagues, customers, competitors – everyone we know – to take part.

It’s easy to feel powerless in the face of a huge problem like climate change, but by uniting large numbers of people and institutions around immediate, effective and achievable action, 10:10 enables all of us to make a meaningful difference. It’s the perfect opportunity to find out what’s possible when we work together.

10:10 is about putting aside our differences to tackle the defining challenge of our age. 10:10 is about working together and raising our game. 10:10 is an idea whose time has come. Let’s get started.”

At Greenmetrics our environmental policy is already designed to reduce impacts, and we plan to use the 10:10 campaign not only to strengthen our own resolve, but to work with others to raise awareness and understanding of what’s possible when you really put your mind to it. We’ll keep you posted.

Sometimes it's hard to spot greenwash - where companies try to impress you with their environmental credentials. This article gives you a few ways to help spot and avoid over-stated environmental claims, with some links to help businesses who want to adopt a more responsible approach.

Green actions speak louder than words

By Susie Howells

Greenwash is what organisations or individuals do, sometimes with the best intentions, to persuade their audience that their actions are environmentally more acceptable. You can find greenwash anywhere: on websites, in brochures, annual reports, tender documents, articles, press releases, in meetings and presentations.

It can be difficult to spot. Ambiguous messages, vague or unsubstantiated statements such as ‘environmentally friendly’ or ‘eco-friendly‘ are meaningless as it’s difficult to prove a direct environmental benefit. Green credentials may be over-stated or implied, with no mention of things that go wrong. You might see comprehensive information about an insignificant issue, with no information about something of genuine concern (such as the impact on local people from an industrial process).

Unrealistic claims and timescales, such as a percentage reduction in emissions by a certain date might look good, but have no hope being achieved without a plan in place. And it’s not enough to highlight normal business practice or compliance with environmental legislation as an achievement.

To avoid the pitfalls of greenwash, it’s best to adopt a long-term, systematic approach to reducing environmental impacts. Track progress in the same way as any other business measure, and make sure there is evidence to back up green claims. Use recognised standards. Don’t over-state achievements. Be clear, be accurate and keep it simple.

Actions speak louder than words. The emphasis is on behaviour and results, and while it’s important to raise awareness, the focus must remain on actual improvements rather than lip-service. Leadership is crucial. This needs genuine direction from the top. Keep it on the agenda at board meetings and let people with an interest know about progress.

A wide range of free guidance and support is available, and there are recognised schemes and quality standards such as ISO14001 and BS8555. Access to funding may be available to help implement environmental improvements.

A reliable place to start is Business Link http://www.businesslink.gov.uk – look for ‘environment and efficiency’.

and

http://www.netregs.gov.uk which provides free environmental guidance for small and medium-sized businesses in the UK.

For government guidance on green claims look at http://www.defra.gov.uk/environment/business/marketing/glc/claims.htm.

With increasing demand for transparency and the impact of an economic downturn, the timing couldn’t be better for businesses to adopt the principles of corporate social responsibility (CSR). The idea is well-established, providing a balanced framework to enable responsible growth, taking into account the social, environmental and economic impacts of activities. A genuine approach will help to build positive relationships with customers and other stakeholders, reduce impacts and costs and increase competitiveness. It could just make the difference in winning new business.
